dharmakṣetre kurukṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ / māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva kimakurvata sañjaya

Tell me, Sanjaya: gathered on the field of dharma, the field of the Kurus, eager to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do?

dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṁ vyūḍhaṁ duryodhanastadā / ācāryamupasaṅgamya rājā vacanamabravīt

Seeing the army of the Pandavas drawn up in formation, King Duryodhana then went up to his teacher and spoke these words.

paśyaitāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmācārya mahatīṁ camūm / vyūḍhāṁ drupadaputreṇa tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā

Look, teacher, at this great army of the sons of Pandu, arrayed for battle by your own gifted student, the son of Drupada.

atra śūrā maheṣvāsā bhīmārjunasamā yudhi / yuyudhāno virāṭaśca drupadaśca mahārathaḥ

Here are heroes and mighty archers, equal in battle to Bhima and Arjuna: Yuyudhana, Virata, and Drupada, the great chariot warrior.

dhṛṣṭaketuścekitānaḥ kāśirājaśca vīryavān / purujitkuntibhojaśca śaibyaśca narapuṅgavaḥ

Dhrishtaketu, Chekitana, and the valiant king of Kashi are here; so are Purujit, Kuntibhoja, and Shaibya, who is the finest among men.

yudhāmanyuśca vikrānta uttamaujāśca vīryavān / saubhadro draupadeyāśca sarva eva mahārathāḥ

Yudhamanyu the bold and Uttamauja the valiant are here, and so are the son of Subhadra and the sons of Draupadi, every one of them a great chariot warrior.

asmākaṁ tu viśiṣṭā ye tānnibodha dvijottama / nāyakā mama sainyasya saṁjñārthaṁ tānbravīmi te

Know also, best of the twice-born, those who are outstanding among us, the leaders of my army. I name them for you so that you may recognise them.

bhavānbhīṣmaśca karṇaśca kṛpaśca samitiñjayaḥ / aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca saumadattistathaiva ca

There is yourself, and Bhishma, and Karna, and Kripa who wins every battle; Ashvatthama, Vikarna, and the son of Somadatta as well.

anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ / nānāśastrapraharaṇāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ

Many other heroes too are ready to give up their lives for me. They carry many kinds of weapons, and all of them are skilled in war.

aparyāptaṁ tadasmākaṁ balaṁ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam / paryāptaṁ tvidameteṣāṁ balaṁ bhīmābhirakṣitam

Our own strength, protected by Bhishma, is without limit, while the strength of theirs, protected by Bhima, is measured and can be reckoned.

ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ / bhīṣmamevābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi

Therefore, standing in your appointed places at every point of entry, let all of you, without exception, give your protection to Bhishma.

tasya sañjanayanharṣaṁ kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ / siṁhanādaṁ vinadyoccaiḥ śaṅkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān

Then the mighty grandsire, eldest of the Kurus, roared aloud like a lion and blew his conch, raising the spirits of Duryodhana.

tataḥ śaṅkhāśca bheryaśca paṇavānakagomukhāḥ / sahasaivābhyahanyanta sa śabdastumulo’bhavat

Then conches and kettledrums, tabors, drums and horns sounded all at once, and the noise of them was a tumult.

tataḥ śvetairhayairyukte mahati syandane sthitau / mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaścaiva divyau śaṅkhau pradadhmatuḥ

Then, standing in their great chariot yoked to white horses, Madhava and the son of Pandu blew their divine conches.

pāñcajanyaṁ hṛṣīkeśo devadattaṁ dhanañjayaḥ / pauṇḍraṁ dadhmau mahāśaṅkhaṁ bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ

Hrishikesha blew the Panchajanya and Dhananjaya the Devadatta, while Vrikodara, fearsome in his deeds, blew the great conch called Paundra.

anantavijayaṁ rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ / nakulaḥ sahadevaśca sughoṣamaṇipuṣpakau

King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, blew the Anantavijaya, while Nakula and Sahadeva blew the conches called Sughosha and Manipushpaka.

kāśyaśca parameṣvāsaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ / dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaśca sātyakiścāparājitaḥ

The king of Kashi, a supreme archer, and Shikhandi the great chariot warrior, Dhrishtadyumna and Virata, and Satyaki who has never been defeated,

drupado draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ pṛthivīpate / saubhadraśca mahābāhuḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuḥ pṛthakpṛthak

Drupada and the sons of Draupadi, and the strong-armed son of Subhadra — all of them, lord of the earth, blew their conches, each one his own.

sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ hṛdayāni vyadārayat / nabhaśca pṛthivīṁ caiva tumulo’bhyanunādayan

That sound tore through the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra, and its tumult made both the sky and the earth resound.

atha vyavasthitāndṛṣṭvā dhārtarāṣṭrānkapidhvajaḥ / pravṛtte śastrasampāte dhanurudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ / hṛṣīkeśaṁ tadā vākyamidamāha mahīpate

Then, lord of the earth, seeing Dhritarashtra's men drawn up and the weapons about to fly, the son of Pandu, whose banner bears Hanuman, raised his bow and spoke these words to Hrishikesha.

    senayorubhayormadhye rathaṁ sthāpaya me’cyuta

Achyuta, bring my chariot to a halt between the two armies.

yāvadetānnirīkṣe’haṁ yoddhukāmānavasthitān / kairmayā saha yoddhavyamasmin raṇasamudyame

so that I may look at these men standing here, eager for battle, and see with whom I must fight in this undertaking of war.

yotsyamānānavekṣe’haṁ ya ete’tra samāgatāḥ / dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddheryuddhe priyacikīrṣavaḥ

I want to see those who have gathered here ready to fight, wishing to please in battle the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra.

evamukto hṛṣīkeśo guḍākeśena bhārata / senayorubhayormadhye sthāpayitvā rathottamam

Spoken to in this way by Gudakesha, Bharata, Hrishikesha drew that finest of chariots to a halt between the two armies.

bhīṣmadroṇapramukhataḥ sarveṣāṁ ca mahīkṣitām / uvāca pārtha paśyaitānsamavetānkurūniti

There, before Bhishma and Drona and all the kings of the earth, he said: Partha, look at these Kurus gathered together here.

    tatrāpaśyatsthitānpārthaḥ pitṝnatha pitāmahān / ācāryānmātulānbhrātṝnputrānpautrānsakhīṁstathā

There Partha saw them standing: fathers and grandfathers before him, and teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, and friends as well.

śvaśurānsuhṛdaścaiva senayorubhayorapi / tānsamīkṣya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvānbandhūnavasthitān / kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo viṣīdannidamabravīt

fathers-in-law and well-wishers too, in both armies. Seeing all these kinsmen standing there, the son of Kunti was overcome with deep pity and spoke these words in sorrow.

    dṛṣṭvemaṁ svajanaṁ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam

Krishna, I see my own people standing here, come together and eager to fight.

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati / vepathuśca śarīre me romaharṣaśca jāyate

My limbs give way beneath me and my mouth goes dry. My body trembles and the hair on it stands on end.

gāṇḍīvaṁ sraṁsate hastāttvakcaiva paridahyate / na ca śaknomyavasthātuṁ bhramatīva ca me manaḥ

The Gandiva slips from my hand and my skin burns all over. I cannot keep standing, and my mind seems to be reeling.

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava / na ca śreyo’nupaśyāmi hatvā svajanamāhave

Keshava, I see omens that point the wrong way, and I see nothing good that can come of killing my own people in battle.

na kāṅkṣe vijayaṁ kṛṣṇa na ca rājyaṁ sukhāni ca / kiṁ no rājyena govinda kiṁ bhogairjīvitena vā

Krishna, I do not want victory, nor kingdom, nor pleasures. Govinda, what use is a kingdom to us, what use enjoyments, or life itself?

yeṣāmarthe kāṅkṣitaṁ no rājyaṁ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca / ta ime’vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṁstyaktvā dhanāni ca

Those for whose sake we wanted kingdom, enjoyments and pleasures are standing here in battle, having given up their lives and their wealth.

ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrāstathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ / mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ śyālāḥ sambandhinastathā

Here are teachers, fathers, sons, and grandfathers too; here are maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, and other kinsmen as well.

etānna hantumicchāmi ghnato’pi madhusūdana / api trailokyarājyasya hetoḥ kiṁ nu mahīkṛte

Madhusudana, I do not wish to kill them even if they kill me, not even for rule over the three worlds — how much less for the earth.

nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrānnaḥ kā prītiḥ syājjanārdana / pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ

Janardana, what joy would be ours in killing the sons of Dhritarashtra? Killing these men, however wrongly they have acted, only sin would come to us.

tasmānnārhā vayaṁ hantuṁ dhārtarāṣṭrānsvabāndhavān / svajanaṁ hi kathaṁ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava

So we ought not to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra, who are our own kin. Madhava, how could we be happy after killing our own people?

yadyapyete na paśyanti lobhopahatacetasaḥ / kulakṣayakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ mitradrohe ca pātakam

Even if these men, their minds seized by greed, do not see the wrong in destroying a family, or the guilt in betraying a friend,

kathaṁ na jñeyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum / kulakṣayakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana

why should we not know enough to turn back from this wrong, Janardana, when we do see clearly the evil in destroying a family?

kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ / dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnamadharmo’bhibhavatyuta

When a family is destroyed, the ancient duties of that family perish with it; and when those duties are gone, lawlessness overtakes the whole family.

adharmābhibhavātkṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kulastriyaḥ / strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya jāyate varṇasaṅkaraḥ

Krishna, when lawlessness prevails, the women of the family are corrupted; and when the women are corrupted, Varshneya, the mixing of social orders follows.

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṁ kulasya ca / patanti pitaro hyeṣāṁ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ

That mixing leads only to hell, for the destroyers of the family and for the family itself. Their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of rice and water.

doṣairetaiḥ kulaghnānāṁ varṇasaṅkarakārakaiḥ / utsādyante jātidharmāḥ kuladharmāśca śāśvatāḥ

By these wrongs of the destroyers of a family, wrongs that bring about the mixing of social orders, the lasting duties of caste and of family are wiped out.

utsannakuladharmāṇāṁ manuṣyāṇāṁ janārdana / narake niyataṁ vāso bhavatītyanuśuśruma

Janardana, we have heard it said that men whose family duties have been destroyed are certain to dwell in hell.

aho bata mahatpāpaṁ kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam / yadrājyasukhalobhena hantuṁ svajanamudyatāḥ

How strange it is: we have set ourselves to commit a great sin, ready to kill our own people out of greed for the pleasures of a kingdom.

yadi māmapratīkāramaśastraṁ śastrapāṇayaḥ / dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyustanme kṣemataraṁ bhavet

It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me in battle while I stood unarmed and offered no resistance.

evamuktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśat / visṛjya saśaraṁ cāpaṁ śokasaṁvignamānasaḥ

Having spoken this way on the field of battle, Arjuna sat down on the seat of his chariot, letting go of bow and arrows, his mind shaken with grief.
