Arjuna slumped on the floor of the chariot, his bow laid down beside him, head bowed

Chapter 1 of 18 · 47 verses

Arjuna’s despair

The armies are drawn up; Arjuna sees his own people on both sides and puts down his bow.

What do I do when every available choice seems wrong?

The Gita’s first answer is that you stop, and say so. Arjuna resolves nothing in this chapter. He asks to be driven between the armies, sees teachers and kinsmen where he expected enemies, argues from compassion and from family duty, and puts down his bow at 1.47. The chapter ends without an answer because the honest first move is to admit the confusion aloud, to someone who can teach you. Krishna answers at 2.2, but the teaching does not begin until 2.11.

Read it with this in mindArjuna is not mocked for breaking down. His crisis matters because his reasons contain both moral insight and attachment. The chapter does not resolve the question; it shows why honest confusion must become teachable inquiry.

Where we are in the dialogue

The Crisis of Arjuna

Dhritarashtra’s divided language opens the scene. Duryodhana counts strength; the conches turn preparation into an irreversible moment. Arjuna asks Krishna to place the chariot between the armies. When opponents become teachers, elders and kin, his certainty collapses. He argues from compassion, family duty and fear of social ruin, then lays down Gāṇḍīva.

Words to carry through
dharma-kṣetra; grief and moral perception; compassion and paralysis; family loyalty; responsible counsel

    Opening vocabulary

Dharmakshetra and Kurukshetra establish both sacred field and battlefield; “mamakah” versus “Pandavah” makes Dhritarashtra’s possessive division textually visible.

Read deeper · Read with 1.27–28, where Arjuna sees relatives on both sides; then with 12.13–19, where non-hatred and equanimity become devotional qualities.

nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrānnaḥ kā prītiḥ syājjanārdana / pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ

Janardana, what joy would be ours in killing the sons of Dhritarashtra? Killing these men, however wrongly they have acted, only sin would come to us.

tasmānnārhā vayaṁ hantuṁ dhārtarāṣṭrānsvabāndhavān / svajanaṁ hi kathaṁ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava

So we ought not to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra, who are our own kin. Madhava, how could we be happy after killing our own people?

yadyapyete na paśyanti lobhopahatacetasaḥ / kulakṣayakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ mitradrohe ca pātakam

Even if these men, their minds seized by greed, do not see the wrong in destroying a family, or the guilt in betraying a friend,

kathaṁ na jñeyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum / kulakṣayakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana

why should we not know enough to turn back from this wrong, Janardana, when we do see clearly the evil in destroying a family?

  40. 1.40–44Family and social orderArjuna fears the destruction of inherited dharmas, ritual continuity and social order.

    1.40

kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ / dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnamadharmo’bhibhavatyuta

When a family is destroyed, the ancient duties of that family perish with it; and when those duties are gone, lawlessness overtakes the whole family.

adharmābhibhavātkṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kulastriyaḥ / strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya jāyate varṇasaṅkaraḥ

Krishna, when lawlessness prevails, the women of the family are corrupted; and when the women are corrupted, Varshneya, the mixing of social orders follows.

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṁ kulasya ca / patanti pitaro hyeṣāṁ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ

That mixing leads only to hell, for the destroyers of the family and for the family itself. Their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of rice and water.

doṣairetaiḥ kulaghnānāṁ varṇasaṅkarakārakaiḥ / utsādyante jātidharmāḥ kuladharmāśca śāśvatāḥ

By these wrongs of the destroyers of a family, wrongs that bring about the mixing of social orders, the lasting duties of caste and of family are wiped out.

utsannakuladharmāṇāṁ manuṣyāṇāṁ janārdana / narake niyataṁ vāso bhavatītyanuśuśruma

Janardana, we have heard it said that men whose family duties have been destroyed are certain to dwell in hell.

aho bata mahatpāpaṁ kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam / yadrājyasukhalobhena hantuṁ svajanamudyatāḥ

How strange it is: we have set ourselves to commit a great sin, ready to kill our own people out of greed for the pleasures of a kingdom.

It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me in battle while I stood unarmed and offered no resistance.

    THE HUMAN QUESTION

Who am I, and what understanding should guide action?

Hansi Gita Bhawan Trust · The Gita for Life

Sanskrit transcribed from published texts and cross-checked verse by verse; transliteration generated from the Devanagari. The English and Hindi renderings are the Trust’s own.

Questions readers ask

About chapter 1.

Does the Gita endorse violence?

No single verse can answer that responsibly. The dialogue begins inside a specific failed peace process and tests motive, duty, consequence and attachment.

Was Arjuna a coward?

No. He arrives ready to fight; his collapse begins when categories become relationships.

Is refusing to act always non-violence?

No. Inaction also has consequences and may protect injustice.

Reflect and practise

One thing to do.

Name the relationship or fear that is narrowing your judgment. Seek counsel before declaring either action or withdrawal righteous.
