Chapter 2 of 18 · 72 verses
साङ्ख्ययोगKnowledge of the Self
The essence of the whole Gita: the Self is never born and never dies; act without craving the fruit; the marks of a steady mind.
Who am I, and what should guide my actions?
Two answers, in that order. You are not the body that changes and ends: what dwells in it is unborn and undying (2.20), and grief that mistakes the perishable for the whole person is grieving the wrong thing. And what should guide action is your own duty, done without a claim on its fruit — prepare carefully, act fully, and give up the demand that the result obey you (2.47). The chapter closes by describing what such a person looks like from outside.
Read it with this in mindThe Self teaching does not make grief shameful or the body worthless. Karma-yoga does not mean ignoring outcomes: prepare carefully, act ethically, and release the demand that reality obey your preferred result.

The Self, Wise Action and Steady Mind
Krishna challenges Arjuna’s collapse, but teaching begins only after Arjuna becomes a disciple. The response moves through the enduring Self, the warrior’s duty, disciplined action without ownership of results, the chain from fixation to ruin, and the portrait of steady wisdom.

Arjuna stops merely arguing and confesses confusion about dharma. He asks Krishna to teach him as a disciple. The Gita’s philosophical instruction begins only after this epistemic humility.
