Arjuna taking up his bow again at sunrise, Shri Krishna beside him at the reins

Chapter 18 of 18 · 78 verses

Liberation through renunciation

The longest chapter gathers everything up. Arjuna says his delusion is gone, and that he will do as Krishna says.

After listening and reflecting, how do I choose?

Freely, and after thinking. The longest chapter gathers everything — renunciation and relinquishment, the five causes of any act, knowledge and action and doer sorted by guṇa, svadharma — and then Krishna stops: reflect on this fully, and do as you wish (18.63). The verse about taking refuge comes after that, not instead of it (18.66). And Arjuna’s answer is not obedience but recovered clarity: my delusion is gone, memory is restored, I will do as you say (18.73).

Read it with this in mindSurrender is not permission to abandon morality, consent or responsibility. Verse 18.66 comes after sustained teaching on action and discernment. The command to take refuge and the invitation to choose must be read together.

Freedom and the Final Choice

The final chapter gathers the book: renunciation and relinquishment, five causes of action, knowledge/action/doer through the guṇas, intellect, firmness and happiness, work and svadharma, perfection, devotion and refuge. Krishna then says: reflect fully and act as you choose. Arjuna’s memory and steadiness return; Sanjaya closes in wonder.

Words to carry through

  1. 18.1–12Sannyasa and tyaga revisitedThe final chapter begins by clarifying renunciation and relinquishment and classifying them through the gunas.

saṁnyāsasya mahābāho tattvamicchāmi veditum / tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthakkeśiniṣūdana

O mighty-armed one, I wish to know the true nature of renunciation, and, O Hrishikesha, slayer of Keshi, the true nature of relinquishment separately.

kāmyānāṁ karmaṇāṁ nyāsaṁ saṁnyāsaṁ kavayo viduḥ / sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṁ prāhustyāgaṁ vicakṣaṇāḥ

The wise know renunciation to be the setting aside of actions driven by desire; the discerning call the giving up of the fruit of all actions relinquishment.

tyājyaṁ doṣavadityeke karma prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ / yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyamiti cāpare

Some thinkers say that action should be abandoned as being tainted with fault; others say that the works of sacrifice, charity and austerity should not be abandoned.

Hear now My settled conclusion about relinquishment, O best of the Bharatas; for relinquishment, O tiger among men, has been declared to be of three kinds.

The works of sacrifice, charity and austerity are not to be abandoned; they must indeed be performed, for sacrifice, charity and austerity are purifiers of the thoughtful.

Renunciation of prescribed duty is not fitting; giving it up out of delusion is declared to belong to darkness.

duḥkhamityeva yatkarma kāyakleśabhayāttyajet / sa kṛtvā rājasaṁ tyāgaṁ naiva tyāgaphalaṁ labhet

Whoever abandons work merely as painful, from fear of bodily hardship, makes a relinquishment born of passion and gains none of its fruit.

kāryamityeva yatkarma niyataṁ kriyate’rjuna / saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ

When prescribed work is done simply because it ought to be done, O Arjuna, with attachment and fruit alike given up, that relinquishment is held to be of goodness.

na dveṣṭyakuśalaṁ karma kuśale nānuṣajjate / tyāgī sattvasamāviṣṭo medhāvī chinnasaṁśayaḥ

He neither hates disagreeable work nor clings to agreeable work; such a relinquisher, filled with goodness, is wise, and his doubts are cut away.

It is not possible for one who wears a body to give up actions entirely; but one who gives up the fruit of action is called a relinquisher.

aniṣṭamiṣṭaṁ miśraṁ ca trividhaṁ karmaṇaḥ phalam / bhavatyatyāgināṁ pretya na tu saṁnyāsināṁ kvacit

Unwanted, wanted and mixed — the fruit of action is of these three kinds after death for those who do not relinquish, but never at all for those who have renounced.

naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtirlabdhā tvatprasādānmayācyuta / sthito’smi gatasandehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṁ tava

My delusion is destroyed and I have regained my memory through Your grace, O Achyuta. I stand firm, my doubt gone; I shall do as You say.

    Arjuna’s recovered agency

Arjuna says his delusion is destroyed and memory/clarity restored; he will act according to Krishna’s word. The Gita therefore closes Arjuna’s arc not in passivity but in lucid commitment.

ityahaṁ vāsudevasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ / saṁvādamimamaśrauṣamadbhutaṁ romaharṣaṇam

Thus did I hear this wonderful dialogue between Vasudeva and the great-souled son of Pritha, a dialogue that makes the hair stand on end.

By the grace of Vyasa I heard this supreme and secret yoga, spoken directly by Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, Himself.

Where there is Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, and where there is Partha, the wielder of the bow, there are prosperity, victory, well-being and steadfast right conduct — such is my conviction.

Questions readers ask

About chapter 18.

What is the difference between sannyāsa and tyāga?

The chapter distinguishes renouncing desire-driven acts from relinquishing attachment to the fruits of necessary action.

Do five causes remove responsibility?

No. They correct the fantasy of sole authorship while ethical agency remains.

Does 18.66 cancel every duty?

No responsible reading isolates it from the chapter’s teaching and Krishna’s invitation to reflect and choose.

Reflect and practise

One thing to do.

For one unresolved decision, list duty, motive, likely harm, counsel received and attachment to outcome. Then choose and accept responsibility without claiming total control.

Continue the journey — Return to 1.47 and 2.7, then read 18.63, 18.66 and 18.73 as one closing movement.
