The yoga of renunciation
Renouncing action and acting selflessly lead to the same place; the second is the easier road.

Arjuna said
saṁnyāsaṁ karmaṇāṁ kṛṣṇa punaryogaṁ ca śaṁsasi / yacchreya etayorekaṁ tanme brūhi suniścitam
Krishna, you praise the renunciation of actions, and then you praise yoga as well. Tell me clearly, once and for all, which of these two is better.
Shri Bhagavan said
saṁnyāsaḥ karmayogaśca niḥśreyasakarāvubhau / tayostu karmasaṁnyāsātkarmayogo viśiṣyate
Both renunciation and the yoga of action lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is better than the renunciation of action.
Know him to be a constant sannyasi who neither hates nor craves. Free of the pairs of opposites, Mahabaho, he is released from bondage easily.
sāṅkhyayogau pṛthagbālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ / ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyagubhayorvindate phalam
Children speak of sankhya and yoga as different things; the wise do not. A man who is properly established in even one of them gains the fruit of both.
yatsāṅkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṁ tadyogairapi gamyate / ekaṁ sāṅkhyaṁ ca yogaṁ ca yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati
The state reached by the followers of sankhya is reached by the followers of yoga too. The man who sees sankhya and yoga as one sees truly.
saṁnyāsastu mahābāho duḥkhamāptumayogataḥ / yogayukto munirbrahma nacireṇādhigacchati
But renunciation is hard to attain without yoga, Mahabaho. The sage who is joined to yoga does not take long to reach brahman.
yogayukto viśuddhātmā vijitātmā jitendriyaḥ / sarvabhūtātmabhūtātmā kurvannapi na lipyate
The man joined to yoga, pure in heart, master of himself, his senses conquered, whose self is the self of all beings, is not stained though he acts.
naiva kiñcitkaromīti yukto manyeta tattvavit / paśyañśṛṇvanspṛśañjighrannaśnangacchansvapañśvasan
The man of yoga who knows the truth thinks, I do nothing at all, even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing.
pralapanvisṛjangṛhṇannunmiṣannimiṣannapi / indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta iti dhārayan
Speaking, letting go, taking hold, opening his eyes and closing them, he holds firmly to this: the senses alone are moving among the objects of the senses.
The man who acts having given up attachment, placing his actions in brahman, is not stained by evil, as a lotus leaf is not wetted by the water.
kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalairindriyairapi / yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṁ tyaktvātmaśuddhaye
With the body, the mind, the intellect, and even with the senses alone, yogis perform action after giving up attachment, for the purification of the self.
yuktaḥ karmaphalaṁ tyaktvā śāntimāpnoti naiṣṭhikīm / ayuktaḥ kāmakāreṇa phale sakto nibadhyate
The man who is steady gives up the fruit of action and attains lasting peace. The unsteady man, driven by desire and attached to the fruit, is bound.
sarvakarmāṇi manasā saṁnyasyāste sukhaṁ vaśī / navadvāre pure dehī naiva kurvanna kārayan
Having renounced all actions with the mind, the embodied one who has control sits at ease in the city of nine gates, neither acting nor causing action.
na kartṛtvaṁ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ / na karmaphalasaṁyogaṁ svabhāvastu pravartate
The Lord creates neither the sense of doership nor the actions of the world, nor the joining of action to its fruit. It is nature that carries all this on.
nādatte kasyacitpāpaṁ na caiva sukṛtaṁ vibhuḥ / ajñānenāvṛtaṁ jñānaṁ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ
The all-pervading one takes on no one's evil and no one's good either. Knowledge is covered over by ignorance, and that is why creatures are deluded.
jñānena tu tadajñānaṁ yeṣāṁ nāśitamātmanaḥ / teṣāmādityavajjñānaṁ prakāśayati tatparam
But for those whose ignorance has been destroyed by the knowledge of the self, that knowledge shines like the sun and reveals the highest.
- 5.17
tadbuddhayastadātmānastanniṣṭhāstatparāyaṇāḥ / gacchantyapunarāvṛttiṁ jñānanirdhūtakalmaṣāḥ
Those whose understanding rests in that, whose self is set on that, who stand firm in that and hold it as their goal, go where there is no return, their impurities washed away by knowledge.
vidyāvinayasampanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini / śuni caiva śvapāke ca paṇḍitāḥ samadarśinaḥ
The wise look with an equal eye on a brahmin who has learning and humility, on a cow, on an elephant, and on a dog and a man who cooks dogs.

ihaiva tairjitaḥ sargo yeṣāṁ sāmye sthitaṁ manaḥ / nirdoṣaṁ hi samaṁ brahma tasmād brahmaṇi te sthitāḥ
Those whose mind rests in evenness have conquered birth and death here itself. Brahman is flawless and even, and so they are established in brahman.
na prahṛṣyetpriyaṁ prāpya nodvijetprāpya cāpriyam / sthirabuddhirasammūḍho brahmavid brahmaṇi sthitaḥ
He should not rejoice on getting what is pleasant, nor be shaken on getting what is unpleasant. Steady of mind and free of confusion, the knower of brahman rests in brahman.
bāhyasparśeṣvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yatsukham / sa brahmayogayuktātmā sukhamakṣayamaśnute
The man whose self is not attached to outer contacts finds the happiness that is within. His self joined to brahman through yoga, he enjoys happiness that does not run out.
The pleasures born of contact with the world are wombs of sorrow. They have a beginning and an end, Kaunteya, and the wise man does not delight in them.
śaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṁ prākśarīravimokṣaṇāt / kāmakrodhodbhavaṁ vegaṁ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ
The man who can bear the force that rises from desire and anger here itself, before he is freed from the body, is a man of yoga, and he is happy.
yo’ntaḥsukho’ntarārāmastathāntarjyotireva yaḥ / sa yogī brahmanirvāṇaṁ brahmabhūto’dhigacchati
The man whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, whose light too is within, is a yogi. Having become brahman, he attains the peace of brahman.
labhante brahmanirvāṇamṛṣayaḥ kṣīṇakalmaṣāḥ / chinnadvaidhā yatātmānaḥ sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ
The seers whose impurities are worn away attain the peace of brahman. Their doubts are cut, they hold themselves in check, and they delight in the good of all beings.
kāmakrodhaviyuktānāṁ yatīnāṁ yatacetasām / abhito brahmanirvāṇaṁ vartate viditātmanām
For those who have put desire and anger aside, who strive and hold their minds in check, and who have known the self, the peace of brahman lies close on every side.

He puts the outer contacts outside, fixes his gaze between the eyebrows, and makes the inward and the outward breath move evenly through the nostrils.

yatendriyamanobuddhirmunirmokṣaparāyaṇaḥ / vigatecchābhayakrodho yaḥ sadā mukta eva saḥ
The sage whose senses, mind and intellect are held in check, who has liberation as his one aim, and from whom desire, fear and anger have gone, is always free.

Knowing me as the one who receives every yajna and every austerity, as the great lord of all the worlds, and as the friend of all beings, a man comes to peace.
