The three kinds of faith

A person is made of their faith. Food, sacrifice, austerity and giving, each in three grades.

Plate 17 — Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga: The threefold faith
Arjuna said

    17.1

ye śāstravidhimutsṛjya yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ / teṣāṁ niṣṭhā tu kā kṛṣṇa sattvamāho rajastamaḥ

Krishna, people who set aside what the scriptures prescribe and still make their offerings with faith — where does that leave them? Is their state one of sattva, rajas or tamas?

Shri Bhagavan said

    17.2

trividhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāvajā / sāttvikī rājasī caiva tāmasī ceti tāṁ śṛṇu

The shraddha of embodied beings is of three kinds, and it grows out of their own nature. It is sattvic, rajasic or tamasic. Listen, and I will describe each.

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata / śraddhāmayo’yaṁ puruṣo yo yacchraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ

Everyone's shraddha matches the make-up of their inner being, Bharata. A person is made of their shraddha: whatever a person's faith is, that is exactly what the person is.

yajante sāttvikā devānyakṣarakṣāṁsi rājasāḥ / pretānbhūtagaṇāṁścānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ

People of sattva worship the devas. People of rajas worship yakshas and rakshasas. The rest, people of tamas, direct their worship to the departed and to hosts of spirits.

aśāstravihitaṁ ghoraṁ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ / dambhāhaṅkārasaṁyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ

Some people take on harsh tapas that no scripture prescribes. They are full of show and ego, driven by desire, attachment and the force of their own will.

karṣayantaḥ śarīrasthaṁ bhūtagrāmamacetasaḥ / māṁ caivāntaḥśarīrasthaṁ tānviddhyāsuraniścayān

Without understanding, they torment the group of elements that forms their body, and me as well, seated within that body. Know that their resolve is demonic.

āhārastvapi sarvasya trividho bhavati priyaḥ / yajñastapastathā dānaṁ teṣāṁ bhedamimaṁ śṛṇu

Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, and so are yajna, tapas and dana. Listen now to how they differ from one another.

āyuḥsattvabalārogyasukhaprītivivardhanāḥ / rasyāḥ snigdhāḥ sthirā hṛdyā āhārāḥ sāttvikapriyāḥ

Foods that increase life, clarity, strength, health, comfort and cheer — juicy, smooth, sustaining and agreeable — are the ones that people of sattva like.

    kaṭvamlalavaṇātyuṣṇatīkṣṇarūkṣavidāhinaḥ / āhārā rājasasyeṣṭā duḥkhaśokāmayapradāḥ

Foods that are bitter, sour, salty, very hot, pungent, dry and burning are what a person of rajas wants. They bring pain, grief and illness.

yātayāmaṁ gatarasaṁ pūti paryuṣitaṁ ca yat / ucchiṣṭamapi cāmedhyaṁ bhojanaṁ tāmasapriyam

Food that is stale, tasteless, foul-smelling, kept overnight, left over from someone else's plate, or unfit to offer, is what a person of tamas likes.

aphalākāṅkṣibhiryajño vidhidṛṣṭo ya ijyate / yaṣṭavyameveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ

A yajna performed as the rules lay down, by people who want no reward, with the mind settled in the thought that this is simply to be done, is sattvic.

abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ dambhārthamapi caiva yat / ijyate bharataśreṣṭha taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam

But a yajna performed with an eye on the reward, or for the sake of display — know that one to be rajasic, best of the Bharatas.

vidhihīnamasṛṣṭānnaṁ mantrahīnamadakṣiṇam / śraddhāvirahitaṁ yajñaṁ tāmasaṁ paricakṣate

A yajna done without the prescribed method, with no food distributed, no mantras, no offering to those who officiate, and no shraddha behind it, is called tamasic.

devadvijaguruprājñapūjanaṁ śaucamārjavam / brahmacaryamahiṁsā ca śārīraṁ tapa ucyate

Honouring the devas, the twice-born, one's teachers and the wise; cleanliness, straightforwardness, celibacy and non-violence — this is called the tapas of the body.

anudvegakaraṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priyahitaṁ ca yat / svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅmayaṁ tapa ucyate

Speech that disturbs no one, that is true, kind and to the listener's good, along with the regular study of scripture — this is called the tapas of speech.

manaḥ prasādaḥ saumyatvaṁ maunamātmavinigrahaḥ / bhāvasaṁśuddhirityetattapo mānasamucyate

A clear and settled mind, gentleness, silence, self-restraint, and honesty of intention — together these are called the tapas of the mind.

śraddhayā parayā taptaṁ tapastattrividhaṁ naraiḥ / aphalākāṅkṣibhiryuktaiḥ sāttvikaṁ paricakṣate

When this threefold tapas is practised with the highest shraddha by people who are steady and who want nothing in return, it is called sattvic.

satkāramānapūjārthaṁ tapo dambhena caiva yat / kriyate tadiha proktaṁ rājasaṁ calamadhruvam

Tapas undertaken to win respect, honour and reverence, or simply for show, is called rajasic here. What it gains is unsteady and does not last.

mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ / parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam

Tapas undertaken out of a foolish notion, by hurting oneself, or in order to destroy someone else, is said to be tamasic.

dātavyamiti yaddānaṁ dīyate’nupakāriṇe / deśe kāle ca pātre ca taddānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam

Dana given because giving is right, to someone who can return nothing, in the right place, at the right time and to a fit recipient, is held to be sattvic.

yattu pratyupakārārthaṁ phalamuddiśya vā punaḥ / dīyate ca parikliṣṭaṁ taddānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛtam

But dana given to get something back, or with a result in view, or given grudgingly and with reluctance, is held to be rajasic.

adeśakāle yaddānamapātrebhyaśca dīyate / asatkṛtamavajñātaṁ tattāmasamudāhṛtam

Dana given at the wrong place and time, to people who are not fit to receive it, without courtesy and with contempt for the person receiving it, is said to be tamasic.

ॐ tatsaditi nirdeśo brahmaṇastrividhaḥ smṛtaḥ / brāhmaṇāstena vedāśca yajñāśca vihitāḥ purā

Om Tat Sat is remembered as the threefold way of pointing to Brahman. From it, long ago, came the brahmanas, the Vedas and the rites of yajna.

tasmādomityudāhṛtya yajñadānatapaḥkriyāḥ / pravartante vidhānoktāḥ satataṁ brahmavādinām

So those who speak of Brahman always begin the acts of yajna, dana and tapas that the rules lay down by first uttering Om.

tadityanabhisandhāya phalaṁ yajñatapaḥkriyāḥ / dānakriyāśca vividhāḥ kriyante mokṣakāṅkṣibhiḥ

With the word Tat, and without aiming at any result, those who seek liberation carry out the acts of yajna and tapas, and dana of many kinds.

sadbhāve sādhubhāve ca sadityetatprayujyate / praśaste karmaṇi tathā sacchabdaḥ pārtha yujyate

The word Sat is used for what truly is and for what is good. Partha, the word Sat is also applied to an action that deserves praise.

yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ saditi cocyate / karma caiva tadarthīyaṁ sadityevābhidhīyate

Steadiness in yajna, in tapas and in dana is also called Sat. And any action done for the sake of the Supreme is likewise named Sat.

aśraddhayā hutaṁ dattaṁ tapastaptaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yat / asadityucyate pārtha na ca tatpretya no iha

Whatever is offered, given, undertaken as tapas or simply done without shraddha is called Asat, Partha. It counts for nothing after death and nothing here.
