Dharma — Righteousness

Whenever dharma declines, the Divine acts to restore it.

The teaching

5 shlokas below, each in Sanskrit, transliteration, and plain words.

The Gita is spoken because dharma is in danger. Its most-quoted promise is that whenever righteousness declines and its opposite rises, the Divine appears — age after age — to protect the good, remove what is harmful and set dharma on its feet again.

For the individual, dharma is not abstract. The Gita names the three gates that lead away from it — desire, anger and greed — and says plainly: give them up. It ends with the assurance that wherever Krishna and Arjuna stand together — wisdom and right action — there victory and well-being are certain.

The Trust’s third object — “to propagate religion and its basic ideals among the general public” — is our small share in the work of 4.7–8. This website is part of it.

The shlokas

In the Gita’s own words.

Bhagavad Gita 4.7

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata / abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham

Whenever dharma declines, I come.

Whenever righteousness weakens and unrighteousness rises, Arjuna, I bring Myself into being.

Bhagavad Gita 4.8

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām / dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge

Age after age, to establish dharma.

To protect the good, to destroy the wicked, and to establish dharma firmly, I appear in every age.

Bhagavad Gita 16.21

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ / kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

Three gates to ruin: desire, anger, greed.

Three gates lead to the ruin of the self — desire, anger and greed. Therefore give up all three.

Bhagavad Gita 16.24

tasmāc chāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau / jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi

Let scripture be your guide to what should be done.

Let the scriptures be your authority in deciding what should and should not be done. Knowing what they lay down, act accordingly.

Bhagavad Gita 18.78

yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ / tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama

Where Krishna and Arjuna stand together.

Where Krishna, the lord of yoga, and Arjuna, the archer, stand together — there are prosperity, victory, well-being and firm justice. This is my conviction.

Common questions

About this teaching.

What does “yada yada hi dharmasya” mean?

Gita 4.7: “Whenever there is a decline of dharma and a rise of adharma, I bring Myself into being.” The next verse (4.8) gives the purpose: to protect the good, remove the wicked and re-establish dharma, age after age.

What is dharma in the Bhagavad Gita?

Righteous order — both the duty proper to each person (svadharma) and the moral law that holds the world together. The Gita treats keeping it as the highest human task and names desire, anger and greed as its chief enemies.
