The supreme Person
The world as an inverted tree, cut with the axe of non-attachment; the supreme Person beyond the perishable.

Shri Bhagavan said
ūrdhvamūlamadhaḥśākhamaśvatthaṁ prāhuravyayam / chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yastaṁ veda sa vedavit
They speak of an imperishable ashvattha tree whose roots are above and whose branches are below, and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. Whoever knows that tree knows the Vedas.
adhaścordhvaṁ prasṛtāstasya śākhā guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālāḥ / adhaśca mūlānyanusantatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣyaloke
Its branches spread downward and upward, fed by the gunas, and the objects of the senses are their buds. Below, its roots run on into the human world, tying people to action.
na rūpamasyeha tathopalabhyate nānto na cādirna ca sampratiṣṭhā / aśvatthamenaṁ suvirūḍhamūlamasaṅgaśastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā
Its real form is not seen here — it has no end, no beginning, no footing anywhere. Cut this deeply rooted ashvattha down with the firm axe of non-attachment.
tataḥ padaṁ tatparimārgitavyaṁ yasmingatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ / tameva cādyaṁ puruṣaṁ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī
Then search out that place from which those who reach it never come back, thinking: I take refuge in the first Person himself, from whom this ancient unfolding streamed out.
nirmānamohā jitasaṅgadoṣā adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmāḥ / dvandvairvimuktāḥ sukhaduḥkhasañjñairgacchantyamūḍhāḥ padamavyayaṁ tat
Free of pride and delusion, past the fault of attachment, always settled in the self, their desires spent, released from the pairs called pleasure and pain — the undeluded reach that changeless place.
na tadbhāsayate sūryo na śaśāṅko na pāvakaḥ / yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṁ mama
The sun does not light that place, nor the moon, nor fire. Those who go there do not return. That is my supreme abode.
mamaivāṁśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ / manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛtisthāni karṣati
In this world of the living, the individual being is an eternal part of me. It draws to itself the five senses and the mind as the sixth, which rest in material nature.
śarīraṁ yadavāpnoti yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvaraḥ / gṛhītvaitāni saṁyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt
When the lord of the body takes up a body, and when he leaves one behind, he carries these with him, the way the wind carries scents away from where they rest.
śrotraṁ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṁ ca rasanaṁ ghrāṇameva ca / adhiṣṭhāya manaścāyaṁ viṣayānupasevate
Presiding over hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell, and over the mind as well, he takes in the objects of the senses.
utkrāmantaṁ sthitaṁ vāpi bhuñjānaṁ vā guṇānvitam / vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ
Leaving the body, staying in it, or experiencing things through the gunas — the deluded do not see him at all. Those who have the eye of knowledge do see.
yatanto yoginaścainaṁ paśyantyātmanyavasthitam / yatanto’pyakṛtātmāno nainaṁ paśyantyacetasaḥ
Yogis who make the effort see him present within themselves. But those who have not worked on themselves, whose minds are unprepared, do not see him even when they try.
yadādityagataṁ tejo jagadbhāsayate’khilam / yaccandramasi yaccāgnau tattejo viddhi māmakam
The light that is in the sun and lights up this whole world, and the light that is in the moon and in fire — know that light to be mine.
gāmāviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmyahamojasā / puṣṇāmi cauṣadhīḥ sarvāḥ somo bhūtvā rasātmakaḥ
Entering the earth, I hold up all beings by my own energy. Becoming the moon, which is made of sap, I nourish every plant that grows.
ahaṁ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṁ dehamāśritaḥ / prāṇāpānasamāyuktaḥ pacāmyannaṁ caturvidham
Becoming the fire of digestion, I live in the bodies of all breathing creatures. Joined with the incoming and the outgoing breath, I cook the four kinds of food.
sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi saṁniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanaṁ ca / vedaiśca sarvairahameva vedyo vedāntakṛdvedavideva cāham
I am seated in the heart of everyone. Memory, knowledge and the loss of both come from me. I am what all the Vedas seek to know; I made the Vedanta, and I know the Vedas.
dvāvimau puruṣau loke kṣaraścākṣara eva ca / kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭastho’kṣara ucyate
There are two persons in this world, the perishable and the imperishable. All beings are the perishable one; what stands unchanging is called the imperishable.
uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ / yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvaraḥ
But the highest Person is someone else. He is called the supreme Self: the undying lord who enters the three worlds and holds them up.
yasmātkṣaramatīto’hamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ / ato’smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
Because I am past the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, I am known in the world and in the Vedas as Purushottama, the highest Person.
yo māmevamasammūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam / sa sarvavidbhajati māṁ sarvabhāvena bhārata
Whoever knows me in this way, without confusion, as the highest Person knows everything there is, Bharata, and worships me with his whole being.

iti guhyatamaṁ śāstramidamuktaṁ mayānagha / etadbuddhvā buddhimānsyātkṛtakṛtyaśca bhārata
This is the most secret of teachings, Anagha, and I have now told it to you. Once a man understands it, Bharata, he becomes wise and his work is finished.
