The cosmic form filling the sky in radiant light while Arjuna kneels below with folded hands

Chapter 11 of 18 · 55 verses

विश्वरूपदर्शनयोगThe vision of the cosmic form

Arjuna is given sight to see the whole universe in one form, and asks for the gentle face to return.

What happens when truth exceeds what comforts us?

You are given sight you did not have, and it is not comfortable. Arjuna sees every form gathered into one, praises it, and then watches warriors pour into blazing mouths. Krishna names himself Time (11.32), and tells Arjuna to be nothing more than the instrument in something already underway (11.33). Being an instrument does not remove the need to discern and consent — Arjuna still has to act. What breaks is the assumption that the whole exists to keep him comfortable.

Read it with this in mindBecoming an instrument does not erase responsibility. Arjuna must still discern, consent and act. The vision breaks the fantasy that the whole exists to preserve individual comfort.

The Universal Form

I am Time, grown full, the destroyer of worlds, and I have come out here to gather the worlds in. Even without you, all these warriors drawn up in the opposing ranks will cease to exist.

    THE HUMAN QUESTION

What does devotion look like as a way of living?

Questions readers ask

About chapter 11.

What does “I am Time” mean?

Krishna identifies with the cosmic power in which embodied forms pass away; the battlefield makes that disclosure terrifyingly immediate.

Is Arjuna a puppet?

No. Krishna later tells him to reflect fully and choose.

Why restore the gentle form?

Finite persons need relationship as well as overwhelming revelation.

Reflect and practise

One thing to do.

Notice one reality larger than your control. Distinguish surrender to truth from surrendering your duty.

Continue the journey — Read “instrument” with the five causes of action in 18.13–17 and choice in 18.63.
