Who is who in the Gita

Drona

Who is Drona in the Bhagavad Gita?

Martial teacher of both Kauravas and Pandavas; Arjuna’s revered guru. Duryodhana addresses Drona while pointing to an army arranged by Dhrishtadyumna. The names carry history. For Arjuna, fighting Drona raises the direct question of whether duty can require action against one’s teacher.

Who he is

Martial teacher of the Kuru princes and the guru under whom Arjuna becomes an exceptional archer.

Older history

The epic’s Drona–Drupada conflict matters because Dhrishtadyumna, son of Drupada, commands the Pandava formation. Thus Duryodhana’s words in 1.3 are not a random military observation: he points Drona toward an army arranged by the son of Drona’s old rival.

Why Arjuna hesitates

Arjuna’s objection in 2.4–5 is not abstract pacifism. Drona embodies guru-rina, training, reverence and personal history now standing on the opposite side of svadharma.
