Dhritarashtra’s counsellor and narrator of the battlefield conversation. Sanjaya is not just a camera. At the end he remembers the dialogue and the Vishvarupa with wonder and joy. The Gita closes through the transformation of a listener as well as that of Arjuna.

Counsellor and narrator who reports the distant battlefield to Dhritarashtra in the epic frame. Much of what the reader “hears” is therefore a narrated conversation.
Why he matters
Sanjaya is more than a neutral transmission device. In 18.74–77 he explicitly remembers the dialogue and the cosmic form with wonder and repeated joy. The book therefore has two listeners: Arjuna within the battlefield conversation and Sanjaya within the narrative frame.
